Coe Hails IOC Gender Testing Decision

Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, recently praised the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for its decision to implement gender testing as a criterion for eligibility in women’s sports, a move that will exclude transgender women from competing. This policy, set to take effect at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, has sparked both support and criticism within the sports community.

The new regulations will restrict Olympic women’s events to biological females, including those with differences in sexual development (DSD). Coe, speaking ahead of the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, stated that he did not enter the World Athletics role to seek popularity but to uphold what he believes is right. He expressed satisfaction that the global perspective on this issue is beginning to align with his views.

However, the decision has not been universally accepted, with some critics, like French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari, describing it as a “step backwards.” The IOC’s reintroduction of the SRY gene testing has been met with opposition from scientists who argue that biological sex cannot be solely determined by chromosomes. Amidst these debates, Coe commended the IOC’s efforts to address gender issues, particularly following controversies during the 2024 Paris Games involving excluded female boxers. He emphasised the importance of protecting women’s sport, reiterating World Athletics’ long-standing commitment to this cause.
