Gombe State governor and chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has called on journalists to remain resolute in defending truth and strengthening democracy.

In a message through his spokesman yesterday to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2026, the governor paid tribute to media professionals, describing them as vital architects of transparency, accountability and informed societies.

He described this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security,” as apt, given the urgent need to safeguard journalism in an increasingly complex world.

Governor Yahaya pointed out several critical areas demanding attention, stressing that journalism remains a powerful pillar of peace, capable of promoting dialogue, resolving conflicts and ensuring stability.

He also raised concerns about the disruptive impact of digital technologies, noting that while artificial intelligence and online platforms have expanded access to information, they have also intensified the spread of misinformation, manipulation and ethical dilemmas.

The Governor appealed to journalists to uphold their role as the conscience of society. He called on the media to remain fair, balanced and non-partisan, especially as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections and beyond.

“The responsibility of the media at this critical time cannot be overstated. Journalists must continue to serve as the conscience of society and a voice of neutrality, ensuring that truth prevails over bias and that the public is guided by facts, not influence.”
