Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has held talks with the United States Consul General in Lagos, Rick Swart, focusing on electoral integrity, opposition participation, and the state of Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi disclosed the meeting on Tuesday via his X account, noting that discussions centred on strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, and expanding economic cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

According to him, both parties emphasised the importance of conducting elections that are free from interference while creating an enabling environment for all political parties—particularly opposition groups—to operate effectively.

He added that the conversation also explored trade and investment opportunities, expressing optimism about improvements in Nigeria’s democratic system and future elections.

Obi described the engagement as productive, voicing hope that subsequent elections in the country would be more transparent and credible.

The meeting comes at a time of shifting political dynamics within Nigeria’s opposition. Recent defections, including those of Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, have altered party alignments ahead of the 2027 polls.

Both politicians exited the African Democratic Congress after prolonged internal disputes over zoning, party structure, and leadership trust issues, which had undermined efforts to build a cohesive opposition bloc.

Their move to the Nigerian Democratic Congress has since drawn interest from lawmakers and political stakeholders seeking a more stable platform, while raising concerns about the future cohesion and relevance of the ADC.

Obi had earlier stated that his decision to leave the ADC followed careful reflection on Nigeria’s political trajectory and his desire to contribute more effectively to national development, maintaining that the move was not driven by personal ambition.
