The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has expressed confidence in the capacity of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, to address delays in the execution of 2025 capital projects.
Agbese, who spoke with journalists in Abuja, described Oyedele’s appointment by Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a deliberate move to restore efficiency and discipline in Nigeria’s fiscal management system.
He said the current delays in capital project implementation should not be misconstrued as systemic failure, noting that the administration has taken steps to strengthen the country’s economic management team.
The lawmaker described Oyedele as a seasoned fiscal policy expert with extensive experience in tax reform, public finance and economic advisory, adding that his expertise would help address structural inefficiencies that have historically slowed budget implementation.
Agbese noted that the minister previously chaired the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, where he played a key role in developing frameworks to improve revenue generation and align fiscal policies with national development objectives.
He added that Oyedele’s background in both the public and private sectors positions him to deliver practical, results-driven solutions to Nigeria’s economic challenges.
According to him, the immediate priority is to ensure efficient utilisation of budgetary allocations and translate appropriated funds into tangible development outcomes across sectors.
“Nigerians expect results. The minister understands the urgency of improving capital releases and ensuring that funds approved by the National Assembly are effectively deployed,” he said.
Agbese also assured that the National Assembly of Nigeria would provide legislative support and oversight to ensure effective implementation of reforms within the finance ministry.
“As a parliament, we will work closely with the executive to ensure that the necessary frameworks are in place for effective budget implementation,” he said.
