Afrobeats star Davido, born David Adeleke, has stirred mixed reactions online after a video showed him throwing cash at fans during a visit to Osun State.
The singer, born David Adeleke, was seen riding in a convoy of luxury SUVs on Tuesday when excited fans rushed to collect money tossed from one of the moving vehicles. The clip quickly went viral, triggering debate across social media.
While many praised the singer for showing love to residents, others criticised the act, arguing that it posed safety risks and reflected a deeper issue tied to poverty in Nigeria.
Media personality Daniel Regha condemned the incident in a social media post, describing the display as “foolish” and merely performative.
“Spraying money like that doesn’t solve any problems,” Regha wrote, adding that genuine support should involve investing in communities, businesses and sustainable projects rather than “a fleeting show of wealth.”
Supporters of Davido, however, defended the singer, noting that money spraying remains a long-standing cultural practice in Nigeria, particularly during celebrations. Some fans argued that critics would still complain regardless of what celebrities choose to do.
Davido, whose uncle Ademola Adeleke is the governor of Osun State, has yet to address the backlash publicly.
