The federal government has stated that the creation of an enabling environment is a critical component in the realisation of the Electricity Vision (EV) 30:30:30.
EV 30:30:30 aims at achieving 30,000MW of electricity by the year 2030 with renewable energy contributing 30 per cent of the energy mix.
The minister of Power Engr. Abubakar Aliyu stated this yesterday while declaring open the third edition of the civil society roundtable discussion with stakeholders in the power sector, organised by Civil Society Groups for Good Governance (CSGGG) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Power, with the theme, ‘Boosting Nigeria’s Power Sector Performance for Overall Socio-Economic Development of the Nation’.
Aliyu said given Nigeria’s enormous energy resources, its huge human capital, and population demography, it is obvious that creating an enabling environment is a critical component in the realisation of the Electricity Vision (EV) 30:30:30.
The minister who was represented by the director, Reform Coordination and Service Improvement Department at the ministry, Mrs Titilayo A. Agbeyo, said the Ministry would focus more on creating the right enabling environment for private investment.
In his welcome address, President of CSGGG, Comrade Ogakwu Dominic Ogakwu, lamented that, “with an investment of over 16 billion dollars by the previous administration, today, Nigeria still generate a paltry 5,000 megawatts as against our current capacity of over 11,000 megawatts of electricity for millions of Nigerian consumers.”
Ogakwu said the roundtable discussion was organised to enable those saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that Nigerians enjoy stable supply of electricity to give account of their stewardship.
“In addition, the discussions are aimed at provoking citizen action against epileptic power supply and issues surrounding consumers rights and obligations. Our belief is that this platform will serve as a wakeup call for leadership commitment and public service accountability not only in the power sector but all facets of our national life and ignite the spirit of sacrificial leadership,” he added.
Also, the president, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Solomon Adodo on his part stressed the need for the nation to harness alternative energy.
He noted that unless the federal government genuinely takes urgent steps to address the ongoing energy crisis in the country, there would be massive job losses.
