The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has credited meticulous preparation, strong institutional support and exceptional team spirit for Nigeria’s historic performance at the recent World Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.

According to the AFN, Team Nigeria’s successful outing was the result of careful planning and unity within the squad, culminating in a groundbreaking qualification achievement that has placed the country at the forefront of African sprint relays.

Chairman of the federation’s media committee, Maxwell Kumoye, revealed in a statement on Thursday that the Nigerian contingent arrived well ahead of the competition to ensure athletes had enough time to acclimatise and prepare properly.

The team travelled with a complete technical crew, including medical personnel, while athletes were fully equipped throughout the competition.

The early arrival reportedly allowed the squad to settle quickly, train effectively and develop stronger chemistry before stepping onto the track.

The AFN also praised the backing received from the National Sports Commission, led by Director General Bukola Olopade, whose presence boosted morale within the camp.

Further support came from the Nigeria Olympic Committee, with senior vice-president Solomon Ogba providing encouragement and motivation to the athletes.

Veteran sports administrator Salihu Abubakar was also praised for offering timely guidance and leadership during the competition.

Nigeria’s biggest achievement at the event came in the mixed 4×100 metres relay, where the country became the first African nation ever to qualify for the event at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship scheduled for Budapest in September 2026.

The accomplishment has been hailed as a landmark moment for Nigerian athletics and a sign of the country’s growing strength in relay events.

Remarkably, the AFN noted that 95 per cent of the athletes in the squad were home-based competitors, highlighting the progress being made in grassroots athletics development across the country.

The inclusion of four secondary school students in the team was also celebrated as evidence of Nigeria’s commitment to nurturing young talent.

While Kenya will represent Africa in the mixed 4x400m relay in Budapest, Nigeria’s qualification in the mixed 4x100m event stands out as one of the continent’s most significant relay achievements in recent years.

Officials believe the performance could mark the beginning of a new era for Nigerian athletics as the nation continues to build a youthful and ambitious relay programme capable of competing with the world’s best.
