A pedestrian and a motorcyclist were killed yesterday by a truck loaded with buckets near the Lagos State University (LASU) main gate at Iyana-Iba flyover.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the fully-loaded truck was travelling at top speed from Volkswagen inward to Badagry when the driver knocked down the pedestrian.
It was gathered that rather than pulling over after the incident, the driver continued on the corridor.
His action allegedly infuriated a motorcyclist and a sympathiser who chased the fleeing truck to force the driver to stop. In the process, the driver rammed into the motorcycle, killing the motorcyclist instantly, while the sympathiser escaped unhurt.
While the remains of the deceased motorcyclist were evacuated by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the corpse of the pedestrian, who had been killed by the truck, was handed over to his relatives, who arrived at the accident scene after being informed of the tragedy.
Both the truck and the severely damaged motorcycle involved in the incident were taken to the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, pending the conclusion of investigation into the accident.
The general manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed grief and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased.
He described the incident as a painful reminder of the grave consequences of reckless driving, particularly among articulated vehicle operators and truck drivers.
Bakare-Oki, therefore, sternly admonished truck drivers and other road users to strictly comply with regulated speed limits and exercise utmost caution, both during daytime and nocturnal operations, to avert needless loss of innocent lives on Lagos roads.
