Facts are emerging on how bandits abandoned ailing Former Chairman of Niger state Universal Education Board and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Alhassan Bawa Niworo, in the bush after collecting N50 million ransom.
It was learnt after collecting ransom to release the Former Niger SUBEB Boss from their captivity, the bandits abandoned him in a bush near Kontagora and informed his people to pick him up.
LEADERSHIP gathered that Alhaji Niworo was released after paying N50 million in addition to the N30 million the family paid initially last year when he was abducted at Ibbi on the New Bussa – Mokwa road in the Borgu local government area of the state.
It was gathered that the bandits called the family last week that Alhaji Niworo was ill and that the family should mobilise N50 million instead of the initial request of N150 million for the release of their captive.
“They requested N150 million, we paid N30 million last year December, they refused to release him, they contacted us a week ago that we should pay additional N50 million because he was sick and threatened to kill him, we rallied round and got the money which we paid yesterday, and they released him about 6 pm”, a family member who preferred anonymity confirmed.
The family source further hinted that Alhaji Niworo was admitted to a hospital in New Bussa immediately after his release due to his poor health.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Niger state command, Wasiu Abiodun, did not give details but promised:” to verify.”
A family member, Professor Saleh Mohammed Niworo, confirmed to LEADERSHIP that his brother had been released but could not speak to his condition because he was in Borgu.
