The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Henry Seriake Dickson, has mourned the death of former lawmaker, Abba Anas Adamu, describing his killing after the payment of ransom as heartbreaking and unacceptable.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Dickson said he was devastated by news that Adamu was abducted while travelling with colleagues and later murdered by his captors despite meeting their ransom demands.

According to Dickson, the incident reflects the worsening insecurity, kidnappings and killings across the country.

“I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear about the kidnapping and gruesome murder of my dear friend and ally, Hon. Abba Anas Adamu of Jigawa State,” he said.

Dickson noted that Adamu was not only a political associate but also a close friend and loyal ally whose relationship with him dated back to their time together in the House of Representatives in 2007.

He recalled Adamu’s role during the constitutional crisis that followed the illness of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, when lawmakers pushed for the transfer of executive powers to then Vice President Goodluck Jonathan.

Dickson explained that under the Nigeria First Forum, Adamu chaired a strategic team that stood firmly against pressure and intimidation during the political process.

“When Hon. Dr. Sani Abdu moved the motion for President Jonathan to become Acting President, Abba Anas was the one who seconded it,” he stated.

He said the lawmakers’ actions eventually led to the emergence of the Doctrine of Necessity, which paved the way for Jonathan’s presidency.

The former Bayelsa governor added that Adamu later faced political setbacks in his home state because of his stance but remained dedicated to national service and loyal to his allies.

He further revealed that Adamu was among the early figures involved in conceptualising the National Democratic Coalition movement before later joining the African Democratic Congress.

Dickson extended condolences to Adamu’s family, friends and associates, describing the late politician as a patriot and committed nationalist.

“Nigeria has lost a patriot, a friend, a brother and a committed nationalist. Personally, I have lost a loyal ally, confidant and brother,” he said.

He also lamented the tragic circumstances surrounding Adamu’s death and prayed for strength for his family and loved ones to bear the loss.
