The White House has disclosed that United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, agreed that Iran must never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon during high-level talks focused on economic cooperation, energy security and bilateral relations.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the White House described the meeting between both leaders as productive, saying discussions centred on strengthening economic ties between the world’s two largest economies.

“President Trump had a good meeting with President Xi of China,” the statement said.

According to the White House, both leaders explored measures aimed at expanding market access for American businesses in China while encouraging increased Chinese investment in U.S. industries.

“The two sides discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation between our two countries, including expanding market access for American businesses into China and increasing Chinese investment into our industries,” the statement added.

The U.S. administration also disclosed that executives from some of America’s largest companies participated in part of the discussions, highlighting the commercial significance of the engagement.

“Leaders from many of the United States’ largest companies joined a portion of the meeting,” the White House stated.

On efforts to combat drug trafficking, the two countries discussed measures to curb the flow of fentanyl precursors into the United States.

“The Presidents also highlighted the need to build on progress in ending the flow of fentanyl precursors into the United States, as well as increasing Chinese purchases of American agricultural products,” the statement said.

The talks also addressed global energy security, particularly the need to maintain free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route.

“The two sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy,” the White House stated.

According to the statement, President Xi reiterated China’s opposition to the militarisation of the strategic waterway and any attempt to impose tolls on its usage.

“The Chinese leader made clear China’s opposition to the militarization of the Strait and any effort to charge a toll for its use,” the statement noted.

The White House further revealed that Xi expressed interest in increasing Chinese purchases of American oil as part of efforts to reduce Beijing’s future dependence on the Strait.

On Iran’s nuclear programme, both leaders reportedly adopted a common position.

“Both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the White House said.

The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by Washington and Beijing to stabilise relations despite lingering disagreements over trade, technology, security and geopolitical influence.
