Lagos State government, in collaboration with development partners and maternal health experts, has doubled down its efforts to tackle maternal mortality through a coordinated healthcare strategy.

The new initiative is aimed at improving services for pregnant women and strengthening collaboration across the state’s health system.

It brought together permanent secretaries, programme managers, professional associations, and development partners from the primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare sectors to identify challenges affecting maternal healthcare delivery and to design a unified response.

In a statement issued to journalists after the event, which began on Wednesday, the executive director of MRH Collective, Olajumoke Oke, said the meeting became necessary because Nigeria’s maternal mortality rate remains high despite years of interventions.

Oke, in her address, noted that Lagos, though considered one of the better-performing states in healthcare delivery, still faces challenges linked to poor coordination among agencies and inconsistent implementation of programmes.
