PenCom Proposes Enhanced Pension Package For Police Personnel

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has proposed an enhanced retirement package for officers of the Nigeria Police Force under the Contributory Pension Scheme, in a move aimed at addressing long-standing agitation over poor pension benefits.

The reform proposal is designed to improve the quality of life of retired police personnel and reduce recurring calls for the police to exit the contributory pension system over welfare concerns.

According to the Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Oloworaran, the new framework will ensure that retired police officers receive a monthly pension equivalent to 100 per cent of their final salary for life.

The proposal also provides for a gratuity payment amounting to 200 per cent of annual emoluments, a measure expected to significantly boost retirement benefits for officers.

Under the arrangement, the federal government is also expected to increase its monthly pension contribution for serving police officers from 10 per cent to 20 per cent, while employees will continue to contribute eight per cent of their salaries.

PenCom said the initiative is aimed at strengthening Retirement Savings Account (RSA) balances, improving pension payouts, and enhancing the long-term sustainability of the contributory pension structure.

The Commission noted that the enhanced package is expected to improve financial security for retired personnel while also boosting morale among serving officers in the Nigeria Police Force.

If approved by President Bola Tinubu, the proposal would reflect government’s recognition of the critical role of the police in maintaining internal security and public order, as well as the need to ensure dignity in retirement.

The development comes amid years of agitation by police pensioners, who have repeatedly protested against the Contributory Pension Scheme, arguing that it has not adequately addressed their welfare concerns.

Organised labour groups, however, have consistently maintained that strengthening the existing contributory framework remains more sustainable than a return to the old Defined Benefits Scheme or a complete exit from the system.

They further argued that improving the current structure and leveraging the capacity of NPF Pensions Limited would better guarantee long-term welfare and financial stability for both serving and retired police personnel.
