The executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Dr Tony Ojukwu, has underlined the need for sustained efforts to protect human rights in the country.

Ojukwu spoke when he declared open a one-day state consultation meeting on the National Action Plan for Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the country in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

Represented by the commission’s state coordinator, Mrs Chiagozie Nwokocha, he called on governments and non-governmental organisations in the state to partner with the commission.

He stressed that ministries, departments, and agencies, security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, among others, have roles to play in the preservation of human rights in society.

Presenting the overview of the plan, which covers 2024 – 2028, Uka said it represents the country’s second comprehensive framework for advancing human rights.

Contributing to the event was the state director of the National Orientation Agency, Comrade Victor Oji, who described it as critical to achieving the commission’s mandate.
