NESREA Seals Kano Rice Mill Over Pollution, Health Concerns

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed a major rice processing facility in Kano State over alleged environmental violations linked to air pollution and persistent offensive odour, in an enforcement action that underscores tightening regulatory scrutiny on industrial operators.

The affected company, Fortune Rice Mills Limited, was shut down following investigations into complaints from residents over sustained dust emissions and environmental nuisance allegedly generated by the plant.

NESREA’s North-West Zonal Office carried out the enforcement operation after what it described as repeated non-compliance with environmental standards, despite earlier warnings and compliance notices issued to the company.

The agency said its investigation established violations of the National Environmental (Air Quality Control) Regulations 2014, as well as the National Environmental (Food, Beverages and Tobacco Sector) Regulations 2023.

Director-General of NESREA, Innocent Barikor, condemned what he described as the “reckless attitude” of some industrial operators toward environmental safety and public health, warning that economic activity must not come at the expense of citizens’ wellbeing.

“The health of Nigerians and the protection of the environment cannot be sacrificed for profit,” Barikor said, adding that the agency would intensify enforcement against facilities found in breach of environmental laws.

The development highlights growing concerns over industrial pollution in urban centres, where residents often face exposure to dust emissions, contaminated air, and inadequate waste management linked to manufacturing activities.

Environmental experts warn that prolonged exposure to industrial pollutants could worsen respiratory illnesses and other health conditions, particularly among children and vulnerable populations living near industrial clusters.

Barikor also urged Nigerians to actively support environmental protection efforts by reporting cases of pollution and regulatory breaches to relevant authorities.

The sealing of the Kano rice mill marks one of NESREA’s latest enforcement actions as the agency steps up efforts to compel industries to comply with cleaner production standards nationwide.
