The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has paid tribute to 17 police officers killed in active service, describing them as heroes who died in defence of Nigeria’s peace and security.
The officers, all members of the Police Mobile Force, were reportedly killed during a terror attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, 13 days ago.
Speaking at the Force Headquarters in Abuja during a tribute ceremony, Disu said the nation had lost gallant officers who died while confronting terrorism and violent extremism.
He vowed that their sacrifice would not be in vain, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force would remain committed to the fight against terrorism, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime.
According to him, the fallen officers “stood in defence of Nigeria, her people, and our collective peace and security,” adding that their bravery would be permanently remembered within the force.
Disu noted that personnel of the Police Mobile Force continue to operate in the North-East in joint operations with the military and other security agencies despite difficult and dangerous conditions.
He praised their dedication, saying officers risk their lives daily to ensure Nigerians can live in relative safety and peace.
The IGP also acknowledged the pain of families left behind, describing the loss as a national tragedy and a reminder of the heavy cost of service.
He assured the families of the fallen officers that the police would stand by them and support them through their period of grief.
Disu reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police Force would not be deterred by attacks, pledging continued commitment to protecting lives and restoring security across the country.
