The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has picked Alhaji Idris Gatumbwa as its candidate to challenge incumbent Senator Ali Ndume in the 2027 senatorial election.
Idris was among the Senatorial, House of Representatives and State Assembly consensus candidates of the ADC that were affirmed by party faithful yesterday at the party consensus primaries held yesterday in Maiduguri.
Idris, an APC governorship aspirant in 2019, was presented as the consensus pick to “reposition ADC for unity, growth, and electoral success” in the southern Borno senatorial district.
The move sets up a contest against Ndume, who recently received backing from Borno South APC stakeholders and has been endorsed by Deputy Speaker Abdullahi Musa Askira.
ADC leaders said they aim to break APC’s dominance in the zone by fielding a credible candidate.
Addressing journalists immediately after the affirmation, the ADC Organising Secretary, Mohammed Umar Bolori , said about 25 candidates of the party for the State House of Assembly were affirmed as consensus during the primary election.
Bolori added that eight House of Representatives candidates and three Senatorial candidates for Borno North, Central and South were consensusly affirmed by party leaders, faithful and stakeholders during the exercise.
The Organising Secretary added that in addition to the party’s governorship primary ticket to be battled by three candidates, there would be primaries for House of Representatives tickets for Jere federal constituency; Hawul- Askira- Uba federal constituency , as well as Gwoza- Damboa – Chibok federal constituency.
He added that some State Assembly primaries would be conducted too alongside the others.
Bolori decried the worsening economic hardship the people of Borno and Nigerians are battling with, amid threating security challenges that resulted in killings, abductions and maiming of innocent citizens under the watch of the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC ) .
He assured all Borno citizens and Nigerians yearning for change that the ADC candidates if elected to govern will address all the ugly situations and salvage the masses of the country.
