British broadcaster Piers Morgan has strongly criticised the Premier League’s choice for Player of the Season, insisting that Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice was far more deserving than Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes was officially named the Premier League Player of the Season on Saturday, following a campaign in which the Portuguese playmaker helped guide the Red Devils to a top-four finish and qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
However, Morgan a well-known Arsenal fan did not hold back his frustration. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he slammed the decision to award Fernandes ahead of England international Rice.
“Ridiculous… Declan Rice should have won this,” Morgan wrote.
“Absolute travesty that someone whose team never once competed for the Title wins over a guy whose brilliance all season led us to the Title.”
Morgan’s argument centres on the fact that while Fernandes put up impressive individual numbers including equalling the Premier League record for most assists in a single season with 20 – his team, Manchester United, were never genuinely in the title race.
By contrast, Morgan believes Rice’s consistency and impact were instrumental in Arsenal pushing for the championship all season long.
The debate highlights the ongoing tension between rewarding individual statistical excellence versus recognising a player’s contribution to a team’s sustained title challenge.
