Former Super Eagles captain and midfielder Sunday Oliseh has cast doubt over José Mourinho’s proposed return to Real Madrid, predicting that the Portuguese tactician may struggle to last beyond three years at the Spanish giants.

Mourinho is reportedly set for a sensational second spell at the Santiago Bernabéu, with reports indicating that the veteran manager will leave Benfica at the end of the season to take charge of the La Liga powerhouse.

The 63-year-old is expected to sign a three-year contract, reigniting memories of his first spell in Madrid, where he won the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup between 2010 and 2013.

While Mourinho remains one of football’s most decorated and charismatic managers, Oliseh believes history suggests that long-term stability could once again prove elusive.

Speaking on Mourinho’s managerial pattern, Oliseh argued that the former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Manchester United boss often experiences what he described as a “third-year burnout”.

“Sadly, there’s the third-year burnout, like at Manchester United and Spurs,” Oliseh said, according to Soccernet.

“Mourinho needs external enemies to thrive, and when he has none, he looks inside.”

Oliseh’s comments reflect a long-standing debate surrounding Mourinho’s management style.

The Portuguese coach has built a career on intense motivation, strong personalities and an ‘us against the world’ mentality that has often delivered immediate success. However, critics have also pointed to tensions with players, club executives and dressing rooms during the latter stages of several managerial spells.

At Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, Mourinho enjoyed periods of success but also faced scrutiny over deteriorating relationships and declining performances toward the end of his tenures.

Despite those concerns, Mourinho remains one of the most successful managers in football history, boasting league titles across several countries and multiple European trophies.

His anticipated return to Madrid is expected to generate enormous excitement and scrutiny in equal measure.

Whether Mourinho can defy what Oliseh describes as the “third-year syndrome” and build a lasting legacy during a second spell in Spain remains a question only time will answer.
