The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has asserted that Nigerians want nothing outside free, fair and credible elections in 2027.

The group warned that the citizens’ votes must count for democracy  to survive and deliver meaningful development in the country.

In a press release issued on Tuesday to mark the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the council said the conduct of transparent and inclusive elections remains critical to sustaining democracy, political stability and national development in Nigeria.

Signed by its national chairman, Dr Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, IPAC urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain neutral and provide a level playing field for all political parties and candidates contesting future elections.

According to the council, Nigerians are increasingly concerned about the integrity of the electoral process and expect the electoral umpire to justify the confidence reposed in it through transparent conduct in upcoming elections.

IPAC specifically pointed to the forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti State and Osun State as major tests of INEC’s competence and readiness for the 2027 general election.

“Nigerians demand free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive elections. Citizens’ votes must count and their mandates respected by all stakeholders in the democratic process,” the statement read.

IPAC also called on politicians to embrace issue-based campaigns and avoid divisive politics capable of undermining democratic growth and national unity.

While felicitating with Muslims on the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, IPAC urged Nigerians to uphold the virtues of sacrifice, tolerance, peace and patriotism in the collective effort to build a stronger democratic nation.

The council further appealed to governments at all levels to ease the economic hardship facing citizens by delivering democratic dividends and prioritising the welfare and security of the people as provided under Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution.

On insecurity, IPAC urged the federal government to intensify the fight against terrorism, banditry, insurgency and kidnapping, while demanding the rescue and release of citizens currently held hostage by terrorists across the country.

The umbrella body of registered political parties in Nigeria also pledged to collaborate with critical stakeholders to ensure the success of future elections and deepen democratic governance in the country.
