Bezos’ Blue Origin Rocket Explodes In Massive Florida Test Fireball

Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket erupted into a massive fireball during a test in Florida on Thursday, marking a fresh setback for Jeff Bezos’s space company as it competes in the global commercial space race.

Videos circulating online showed the towering rocket engulfed in flames before a large plume of smoke rose into the sky, while shocked spectators were heard reacting, shouting “Oh no!” and “Oh my God!” as the explosion unfolded.

In a statement on X, Blue Origin confirmed an “anomaly” occurred during testing at Cape Canaveral, Florida, but said all personnel were safe.

“We experienced an anomaly during testing. All personnel have been accounted for,” the company said.

The incident adds to growing challenges for Blue Origin as it seeks to compete with rivals such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX in advanced spaceflight development.

Jeff Bezos said it was too early to determine the cause of the failure but vowed the company would recover and continue its mission.

“It’s too early to know the root cause, but we’re already working to find it,” Bezos wrote on X.
“Very rough day, but we’ll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying. It’s worth it.”

The 98-metre New Glenn rocket is central to Blue Origin’s long-term plans and is designed as a heavy-lift vehicle to rival SpaceX’s Starship programme.

Elon Musk also reacted to the incident, describing it as “most unfortunate.”

The explosion comes weeks after a previous New Glenn mission failed to deploy a communications satellite into orbit for AST SpaceMobile, despite the successful recovery and reuse of its booster.

Following that earlier failure, the US Federal Aviation Administration ordered an investigation. Blue Origin later said the probe had been completed and approved by regulators, attributing the issue to thermal conditions that prevented an engine from reaching full thrust.

The latest setback has drawn attention from US officials involved in future space missions.

Florida Congressman Mike Haridopolos said he had spoken with NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, expressing relief that no injuries were reported.

NASA, which is working with Blue Origin on lunar lander development under the Artemis programme, described rocket development as highly complex and risky.

“Spaceflight is unforgiving, and developing new heavy-lift launch capability is extraordinarily difficult,” Isaacman said.

NASA plans in-orbit tests involving lunar systems in 2027, with a crewed Moon landing targeted before 2028, though analysts continue to question whether timelines for both Blue Origin and SpaceX are realistic.
