FC Barcelona have officially completed the signing of England winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. The Catalan giants confirmed on Friday that the 25-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at the Camp Nou, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2031.

The deal, worth an initial £69 million, represents a significant financial outlay for Barcelona, who beat off stiff competition from a host of Europe’s elite to secure Gordon’s signature. Bayern Munich and Chelsea were both heavily interested in the former Everton academy product, while long-term admirers Arsenal and Liverpool had also tracked his progress over recent seasons.

Gordon arrives in Spain at the peak of his powers after a blistering campaign with Newcastle United. The electric winger made 46 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies last season, finding the net 17 times. Most notably, he carried his lethal form into the Champions League, scoring 10 goals in just 12 matches on the continent – a return that cemented his reputation as a big-game performer and alerted Europe’s biggest clubs.

The 25-year-old’s rise has also been recognised at international level. He has already earned 17 caps for England and is widely expected to be a key part of Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming World Cup this summer. His pace, direct running, and improving end product make him a natural fit for Tuchel’s attacking plans.

Gordon’s departure from St James’ Park marks the end of a highly successful two-and-a-half-year spell on Tyneside. He joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for an initial fee of £40 million, a move that initially raised eyebrows but quickly proved to be a shrewd investment. Over his time at the club, he made 152 appearances, becoming a firm fan favourite and playing a central role in Newcastle’s resurgence as a Champions League regular.

For Barcelona, the signing of Gordon is a clear statement of intent. After years of financial restructuring, the club is now ready to compete for top-tier talent once again, and the Englishman’s arrival brings youth, energy, and a proven goal threat to their frontline. He will be presented to the media at the Camp Nou later this week, wearing the Blaugrana colours for the first time.
