The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has recovered two bodies from Ariyo River along Amuloko–Akanran Road in Ibadan following a fatal road accident involving a Toyota Avensis that plunged into the waterway.

The special adviser on Fire Services Reform and chairman of the agency, Dr. Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident on Saturday, saying the distress call was received at about 21:40hrs on Friday, May 29, 2026.

He said fire officers, led by ACFS Amoo, were immediately mobilised to the scene after the report was received.

“On arrival, it was confirmed that the vehicle had swerved off the road and submerged in the river,” he said.

He explained that rescue operatives swiftly commenced operations and successfully recovered two victims from the submerged vehicle.

“The victims were subsequently handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force led by ASP Adesuwa Sesan from Ogbere Target Police Station, Ibadan, for further necessary action,” he added.

Dr. Akinwande said preliminary findings indicated that the accident was caused by overspeeding and brake failure.

He added that the operation was concluded at about 01:19hrs, after which the team returned to base and remained on standby.

The fire service boss urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during festive periods, and ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles to avoid preventable accidents.

He also advised members of the public to promptly report emergencies with accurate location details through the agency’s emergency lines.
