The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has approved the results of its recently conducted presidential and governorship primaries, alongside other elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The approvals were made at the party’s 101st NEC meeting held on Saturday in Abuja, where members reviewed reports submitted by various party organs on the conduct of primaries across the federation.

The NEC also approved the results of the State Houses of Assembly and National Assembly primaries, with the exception of constituencies where appeals were still pending as of May 29.

It further excluded areas where primary elections had not yet been concluded, stating that such constituencies would be addressed upon completion of the ongoing exercise.

In a major organisational decision, the NEC approved a 12-month extension of the tenure of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), effective from the expiration of its current mandate.

The committee also approved the establishment of caretaker committees at zonal, state, local government, and ward levels for a 12-month period to strengthen party administration ahead of the polls.

In a political statement, the NEC recognised former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, as a “prisoner of conscience” and called for his immediate release from detention, though no further details were provided on the circumstances of his alleged detention.

In his welcome address, the National Chairman of the ADC, Senator David Mark, urged members to strengthen unity and deepen internal democracy as the party positions itself for the 2027 elections.

Mark described the meeting as significant, noting that it came at a critical period in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

He thanked party members for their commitment, describing their sacrifices as central to the party’s survival and growth.

According to him, the ADC continues to attract Nigerians because of its emphasis on integrity, competence, justice, and service.

Mark said Nigeria was currently facing severe security and economic challenges that required urgent and collective intervention from all stakeholders.

He lamented the worsening insecurity across the country, noting that many communities had been displaced while farmers could no longer access their farmlands safely.

He also described the economic situation as difficult, saying businesses were struggling and millions of Nigerians were facing hardship and uncertainty.

“As a responsible opposition party, the ADC does not celebrate the difficulties confronting our nation or seek political advantage from the suffering of Nigerians,” he said.

He, however, stressed that the party remained committed to supporting genuine efforts aimed at restoring peace, stability, and national cohesion.

Mark urged all levels of government to intensify efforts to address insecurity and improve citizens’ welfare.

He added that the NEC meeting was also aimed at strengthening internal democracy and ensuring the party remained well-structured ahead of future elections.

“Our strength lies not in division but in unity. We must resist every tendency capable of weakening our collective resolve,” he warned.
