Nigerian comedian and skit maker, Abdulgafar Ahmad Abiola, popularly known as ‘Cute Abiola’, has apologised to former First Lady Patience Jonathan over comments made years ago about her reaction to the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.

His apology has sparked fresh conversations about how the former First Lady was viewed during one of Nigeria’s most tragic moments, with many reflecting on the public response to her emotional remarks at the time.

In a post on Instagram and Facebook, Cute Abiola said the tears and emotional pleas of Patience Jonathan during the crisis were unfairly mocked. Looking back on the incident, he said her emotions should not have been treated as a joke, adding that “your tears were not weakness”.

According to him, her reaction showed genuine concern for the victims and their families during a painful chapter in the nation’s history.

He wrote:

“MUMMY! I just want to say we are sorry.”

“Years ago, when you cried on national television over the pain, bloodshed, and kidnapping of innocent children, you felt the pain of the victims and their families. You spoke with emotion because you understood the gravity of what was happening to our nation. Today, as kidnapping and insecurity continue to affect innocent Nigerians, many now realise that their tears were not a weakness. They were humanity. We are sorry for the ridicule. Thank you for caring. Thank you for speaking up. And may God comfort every family affected by this tragedy and restore peace to our nation.”

His apology has stirred mixed reactions online, with some users commending him for revisiting the issue and acknowledging past mistakes with comments like:

@muibim said: “People don’t appreciate what they have until they lose it. May Almighty heal our lands.”

@ oluwatobiiee said: “Best First Lady ever.”

@divisionary_cakes1 commented: “She is the only First Lady we have ever had in Nigeria, but we disappoint her, we never take her crying seriously, but now see where we are today, even worse than then.
Hmm, it is well with our country, I pray that God show us mercy 🙏🙏.”
