France have been handed a major fitness concern after defender William Saliba reportedly aggravated an existing injury during Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Saliba completed the full 120 minutes in Budapest as Arsenal suffered heartbreak, losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw with the French champions.
The dramatic final ended in disappointment for the Gunners after Gabriel Magalhães missed the decisive spot-kick, denying Arsenal a first-ever Champions League crown.
However, attention has now shifted to Saliba’s fitness.
According to Foot Mercato, as cited by Football London, the Arsenal defender entered the final carrying a minor injury which worsened during the intense encounter at the Puskás Arena.
The development has sparked concerns within the France camp ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Saliba was one of Arsenal’s most dependable performers during the 2025/26 campaign, making 50 appearances as Mikel Arteta’s side captured the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final.
His commanding displays have also established him as a central figure in Didier Deschamps’ defensive plans alongside Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano.
With France scheduled to open their World Cup campaign against Senegal on 16 June, uncertainty surrounding Saliba’s condition may force Deschamps to consider alternative defensive combinations.
Although official confirmation regarding the severity of the injury remains pending, French supporters will be hoping the influential centre-back avoids a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
