The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Benedict Umeano, a lawyer, as a member of the board of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Umeano was confirmed on Tuesday during the plenary after the senate considered and adopted a report presented by Senator Neda Imasuen (Edo South), chairman of the committee on ethics, code of conduct and public petitions.

The confirmation followed a request by President Bola Tinubu asking the upper legislative chamber to approve Umeano’s appointment as a board member of the CCB.

With the confirmation, Umeano is set to serve a second term on the CCB board.

He was first appointed to the position in 2021 and was sworn in alongside other board members by the late former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 20 of the same year.

Speaking after the confirmation, the senate president congratulated the nominee and wished him a successful tenure.

“Let me thank the president for the appointment, and congratulate Barrister Umeano and members of his family, and wish him a very successful service through the Code of Conduct Bureau of his fatherland,” Akpabio said.

“May God guide him and grant him wisdom to do the right thing for the benefit of this country.”

On April 22, Tinubu asked the senate to confirm Umeano’s appointment as a member of the governing board of the CCB representing the south-east.

In a letter read during plenary, the president said the nomination was made in accordance with section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Tinubu noted that Umeano was being considered for a second term and requested expeditious consideration of the nomination.

The senate subsequently referred the request to its committee on ethics, code of conduct, and public petitions for legislative review before Tuesday’s confirmation.
