The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has praised the Super Eagles, their technical crew and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, following Nigeria’s impressive performances at the Unity Cup and in the international friendly against Poland.

Shaibu, who joined other dignitaries at the Nigeria–Poland Match Viewing Party held at the VIP Lounge of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, commended the team for displaying resilience, determination and the quality that has long made Nigerian football respected across the globe.

The former Deputy Governor of Edo State described the Unity Cup and the Nigeria-Poland football engagement as important initiatives that have highlighted the unifying power of sport and its role in promoting national pride, international cooperation and youth development.

He also lauded Adeboye for his continued commitment to grassroots sports development, noting that his efforts align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by creating opportunities that foster youth engagement, national unity and international sporting relations.

“The Super Eagles deserve commendation for representing Nigeria with pride. I also congratulate the coaching crew for their efforts and Hon. Adeyinka Adeboye for his dedication to initiatives that continue to elevate the image of Nigerian sports both locally and internationally,” Shaibu said.

Despite his praise, the NIS boss stressed the importance of maintaining concentration throughout matches, particularly during the closing stages. Reflecting on Nigeria’s 2-2 draw with Poland, he noted that the Super Eagles appeared on course for victory after Paul Onuachu’s penalty had given them the lead before a late equaliser denied them success.

“Football is a game of 90 minutes and beyond. Players must remain focused and disciplined until the final whistle. At the highest level, a brief lapse in concentration can change the outcome of a match,” he stated.

Shaibu urged the players and coaching staff to view the result as a valuable learning experience and continue building a team capable of competing with the world’s best.

“The quality is there, the talent is there and the commitment is there. What is required is sustained concentration from start to finish. If we continue on this path, Nigerian football will achieve even greater success in future competitions,” he added.
