Health Officials Urge FIFA To Reverse Water Bottle Restriction

Just a week before the World Cup kicks off, FIFA is facing sharp criticism from heat-safety experts who say a last-minute ban on reusable water bottles could put spectators in danger.

Originally, fans were allowed to bring empty, clear plastic bottles up to one liter into stadiums. That guideline, outlined in the official code of conduct, has now been scrapped. With the tournament set to begin on June 11, FIFA announced that bottles, cups, jars, and cans are all prohibited — a move intended to stop fans from hurling objects onto the field.

“FIFA is committed to protecting the health and safety of everyone involved,” the organisation said in a statement, adding that water will be available for purchase inside venues at regular prices.

But experts on heat-related illness are alarmed. One warned that the policy “will clearly heighten the risk of heat-related health incidents.” Their concern follows a May report that temperatures at 14 of the 16 host stadiums are expected to reach dangerous levels — and that FIFA’s existing heat safety plans are “inadequate.”

FIFA has pointed to cooling measures outside stadiums, such as misting stations, hydration points, fans, and cooling tents. Inside, water bottles will be sold at prices consistent with other events held at each venue.

The late change has also drawn anger from fan groups. The Free Lions England supporters’ organization called it a “strange, late change” on X, noting that free water access and the ability to bring personal bottles had been repeatedly promised during talks with FIFA.

“Naturally, the immediate thought from supporters is this is just the latest money-grab,” the group wrote. “For how hot the stadiums will be, many in open air, just let fans bring a bottle if they want to.”

Similar bottle restrictions were in place during the last World Cup in Qatar. This time, fans are already frustrated by soaring ticket prices and inflated train fares — and now worry they may be charged even for free water fountains inside stadiums.
