Residents of Ifa Ikot Idang in the Etoi clan, Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, have commended the commissioning of a 180-foot solar-powered borehole facility donated by LG Electronics as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Head of Corporate Marketing at LG Electronics Nigeria, Mr Paul Mba, said the intervention reflects the company’s commitment to using technology to address critical social challenges.

According to him, the solar-powered system was designed to operate independently of the national grid, ensuring a consistent water supply while promoting long-term sustainability.

“This intervention reflects our commitment to leveraging technology to tackle real-life challenges in water access, energy sustainability and community development,” Mba said.

“Our solar-powered system guarantees a continuous water supply without relying on the national grid. The 5,000-litre tank, powered by high-efficiency solar panels, drives a pump drawing water from a 180-foot borehole, making the system both sustainable and cost-effective for the long-term benefit of the community.”

Also speaking, the Public Relations and CSR Manager of LG Electronics Nigeria, Mr Moses Osime, said the initiative goes beyond infrastructure delivery, noting that it is aimed at restoring dignity and improving the quality of life in underserved communities.

“At LG Electronics, we understand the struggle communities like Ifa Ikot Idang face in accessing clean water,” Osime said. “This intervention restores dignity, renews hope and underscores that sustainable development must prioritise people. Today marks the easing of a long-standing burden and the beginning of a better daily life.”

Community leaders welcomed the project, describing it as a major relief for residents who have endured years of hardship due to lack of potable water.

The Village Head of Idang, Mr Mancus Asuquo Ibanga, said the project has significantly improved daily living conditions in the community.

“The support from LG Electronics is a long-awaited blessing for our community,” he said. “Having clean water close to home has restored dignity to our daily lives, especially for our women and children who previously travelled long distances to access safe drinking water.”

The Vice Chairman II of Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, Aparawa Jimmy Essien, also commended the initiative, describing it as a new chapter of hope for the community. He pledged community support to ensure the facility is properly protected and maintained.
