Super Falcons Eye Improved Performance Against Senegal In 2nd Friendly

Head Coach Justine Madugu has revealed that the Super Falcons will adopt a more aggressive and purposeful approach when they face Senegal in their second international friendly match on Monday.

The nine-time African champions edged the Lionesses of Teranga 2-1 in the first encounter at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne-Remo on Friday but were made to work hard for the victory.

Speaking ahead of the rematch, Madugu said his side would look to improve several aspects of their game as preparations continue for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

“We want to be more intentional and effective going forward. These matches are important because they give us the opportunity to assess the team and fine-tune our preparations ahead of the tournament,” he said.

The Super Falcons secured victory in Friday’s encounter through goals from veteran striker Asisat Oshoala, who converted a penalty, and midfielder Toni Payne. Senegal pulled one back four minutes from time to set up what promises to be another competitive contest.

Nigeria and Senegal have a history of closely fought encounters. In 2016, the Falcons eliminated the West Africans 3-1 on aggregate in a WAFCON qualifying tie, drawing the first leg 1-1 before winning the return fixture 2-0.

Both teams are using the friendlies as part of their build-up to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco from 25 July to 16 August.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group C alongside Egypt, Zambia and tournament debutants Malawi, while Senegal will compete in Group A with hosts Morocco, Algeria and Kenya.

The Super Falcons will be aiming to secure a record-extending 11th continental title, while Senegal are hoping to make a significant impact on the African stage.

The tournament also carries added significance as it serves as the qualifying competition for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Africa’s top four teams will qualify automatically, while the fifth-placed nation will earn a place in the intercontinental play-offs.

Monday’s friendly is therefore expected to provide another valuable test for both sides as they continue preparations for one of the most important competitions on the women’s football calendar.
