Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo, has raised concerns over rising cases of kidnapping as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections, warning that insecurity must not be allowed to escalate.
The governor spoke on Sunday during a worship service at LoveWorld City (Christ Embassy) in Benin City, where he called for intensified prayers against kidnapping, cultism and other security challenges confronting the nation.
Okpebholo said the increasing wave of abductions, particularly as political activities begin to build ahead of the elections, was a worrying development that required urgent national attention.
“This country does not belong to kidnappers. No individual or group should hold the nation captive for personal or political interests,” he said.
He added, “As elections draw closer, kidnapping has become a growing concern. However, with the prayers of God’s people and collective efforts, we believe these challenges will be overcome.”
The governor urged Nigerians to continue praying for peace, security and economic recovery in the country, stressing that unity and collective responsibility were essential in overcoming current challenges.
He also called for prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, asking God to grant him wisdom and strength to effectively lead the nation.
Okpebholo noted that tackling insecurity and economic hardship would require both divine intervention and sustained commitment from citizens and government at all levels.
In his remarks, the officiating pastor, Moses Olayemi, led special prayers for Nigeria, its leaders and communities, seeking divine peace, protection and economic restoration.
Olayemi also commended Governor Okpebholo for ongoing development projects in Edo State, particularly improvements in road infrastructure, noting that residents were already beginning to feel the impact of the administration’s efforts.
