The House of Representatives has called for a comprehensive investigation into the train accident involving a service on the Itakpe–Warri rail corridor, while also urging the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to compensate victims affected by the incident.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion moved by Hon. Francis Waive, who represents Ughelli North/South/Udu Federal Constituency of Delta State, during Tuesday’s plenary.

Waive told the House that the accident occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, involving a train that departed Ujevwe en route to Itakpe, resulting in fatalities, injuries, and widespread disruption for passengers.

He said preliminary reports indicated that no fewer than four passengers died in the crash, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to hospitals for emergency treatment.

The lawmaker described the Itakpe–Warri rail corridor as a critical national transport route linking Delta, Edo, and Kogi States, serving commuters, traders, workers and businesses across the region.

He expressed concern that the latest incident has further raised questions about passenger safety, operational standards, maintenance culture, and emergency response systems within Nigeria’s railway operations.

According to him, many passengers also suffered financial losses, emotional trauma, and damage to personal belongings, in addition to injuries sustained in the accident.

The House therefore urged the NRC to carry out a full investigation into the cause of the crash and publicly release its findings, including steps being taken to prevent a recurrence.

Lawmakers also mandated the corporation to provide adequate compensation to all affected passengers for deaths, injuries, losses, and other inconveniences arising from the incident.

Waive commended emergency responders, medical personnel, security agencies, and residents who assisted in rescue operations and the evacuation of victims to hospitals.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House directed its Committees on Land Transport and Legislative Compliance to ensure implementation of the resolution and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
