Rivers Monarch Denies Claims Of Mass Arrest In Ogoni Community

The traditional ruler of Bangha Kingdom in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, King Suanu Baridam, has dismissed allegations of mass arrests in Taabaa community, insisting that security operatives are only carrying out lawful investigative procedures.

His clarification comes amid claims by the traditional ruler of Taabaa community, Chief Prosper Neeuwe, that no fewer than 15 residents were declared wanted by the police following an alleged assassination attempt on the Bangha monarch.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt, King Baridam maintained that the Nigeria Police Force was not engaged in any mass arrest but had only invited individuals believed to have useful information relevant to ongoing investigations.

He questioned what he described as attempts to undermine the investigation into the alleged assassination attempt on his life, asking why efforts to identify those responsible should be resisted.

“There is no evidence of mass arrests in Taabaa community, contrary to claims being circulated in some quarters,” the monarch said, adding that the incident occurred along the boundary between Taabaa and Sogho communities, necessitating police inquiries from persons who may assist investigations.

He stressed that police invitations for questioning should not be misconstrued as persecution or collective punishment, describing them as standard procedures in criminal investigations.

King Baridam also expressed concern over repeated media interventions by HRH Chief M.S.K. Nule, alleging that such comments appeared to question ongoing investigative efforts.

According to him, Chief Nule has not publicly condemned the assassination attempt but has instead focused on criticising security operations, a posture he said raises questions about his intentions.

“It raises legitimate questions as to why he appears uncomfortable with efforts aimed at identifying and bringing the perpetrators to justice,” he said.

The monarch urged community leaders and stakeholders to support security agencies, stressing that cooperation is essential for uncovering the truth and ensuring lasting peace in the area.

He reaffirmed confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, expressing optimism that innocent persons would not be wrongly implicated while those found culpable would face justice.

King Baridam also called on the public to disregard speculation and premature conclusions, insisting that only proper investigation and due process would establish the truth.

He reiterated his commitment to pursuing justice through lawful channels until those responsible for the alleged attack are identified and held accountable.
