The Rundunar Kishin Kano/Kano Patriotic Front (RKK/KPF) has unveiled plans to publish a compendium documenting the life, leadership and contributions of Nigeria’s former Head of State, Sani Abacha, as part of efforts to preserve what it described as the true account of his administration.

The disclosure was made during a one-day memorial symposium held in Kano to commemorate the 28th anniversary of Abacha’s death. The event, themed “Securing Nigeria: The Strategic Examples of the Late General Sani Abacha’s Administration,” brought together students, academics, retired military officers and other stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of RKK/KPF, retired Major General Ibrahim Sani, said the proposed publication would seek to present factual accounts of Abacha’s tenure and address what he described as misconceptions surrounding the late military ruler.

According to him, individuals who worked closely with Abacha would be consulted and interviewed to ensure that the publication reflects verified historical records rather than “hearsay, propaganda or fake news.”

“It is very important to bring out reality, not hearsay and not propaganda. There are so many things being said about him that are not straight. Those who worked with him have started sharing their experiences, but we want them to come together and produce a compendium that will give the true picture of what happened,” he said.

Sani explained that a committee would soon be constituted to coordinate the project, adding that a similar initiative was being pursued on the legacy of former military Head of State, Murtala Mohammed.

He said the symposium was also organised to expose younger generations to leadership virtues such as discipline, patriotism and courage, which he said were exemplified by Abacha.

Also speaking, the Chief Warrior of Kano, Ambassador Ahmed Umar, described the late leader as a nationalist whose commitment to Nigeria’s stability and sovereignty remained worthy of recognition.

He lamented that Abacha’s contributions had not received adequate attention since his death and called for the memorial symposium to become an annual event.

“General Abacha deserves to be celebrated, honoured and recognised for what he did for the advancement, stability and protection of the Nigerian state. This programme will help the younger generation appreciate the sacrifices and achievements of past leaders,” Umar said.

He identified honesty, discipline, courage, fearlessness and nationalism as some of the qualities that distinguished the late military ruler.

The symposium featured presentations on leadership, governance, with participants urging Nigerian youths to embrace patriotism and selfless service in nation-building.
