Sanwo-Olu Announces Phase 2 Plans As Lekki Port Nears Full Capacity

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has disclosed that development work on Phase 2 of the Lekki Deep Sea Port will commence soon as the facility approaches the limits of its installed capacity, underscoring Lagos’ growing importance as a regional maritime and logistics hub.

Sanwo-Olu made the announcement at the Invest Lagos Summit 3.0 held in Lagos,ll
where he highlighted the state’s ongoing infrastructure drive aimed at strengthening trade, investment, and economic integration across Africa.

According to the governor, the rapid growth of Lekki Deep Sea Port within a short period of operation has made expansion imperative, with Phase 2 expected to significantly increase cargo-handling capacity, improve logistics efficiency, and reinforce Lagos’ position as a gateway to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

He noted that the AfCFTA presents enormous opportunities for Lagos, given its market of more than 1.4 billion people and a combined gross domestic product exceeding $3 trillion.

“With the African Continental Free Trade Area creating a market of over 1.4 billion people and a combined GDP exceeding $3 trillion, Lagos occupies a uniquely strategic position. The Lekki Deep Sea Port, within five years, is moving to Phase 2 because it is almost reaching the full potential of its installed capacity.

“And just within five years, it is moving to Phase 2. These are not just aspirations but projects that have been implemented and are under implementation. They have been funded, progressing, and transforming the investment landscape of our state,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor stressed that continued investments in critical infrastructure are positioning Lagos as a leading destination for trade and industrial development, while supporting Nigeria’s broader economic growth agenda.

Responding,the Managing Director of Lekki Port, Wang Qiang, commended the Lagos State Government for sustaining a stable and investment-friendly environment that has enabled the port’s rapid development and operational success.

He said the next phase of the project would expand the port’s operational capacity, improve cargo-handling efficiency, and attract additional global shipping and logistics investments to Nigeria.

Qiang added that the expansion aligns with Nigeria’s trade facilitation objectives and responds to increasing demand from regional and international shipping networks.

“We are deeply encouraged by the continued support of the Lagos State Government, whose infrastructure-led policies have created a stable and forward-looking environment for long-term maritime investment.

“The commencement of the next phase of development represents a significant milestone in our journey to expand capacity, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen Lekki Port’s position as a premier gateway for West African trade under the AfCFTA framework,” he said.
