African Fans Turn On South Africa After World Cup Opener Defeat

When the final whistle confirmed South Africa’s 2–0 loss to Mexico, the anticipated wave of continental solidarity never materialised. Instead, social media erupted in gleeful mockery—not just of Bafana Bafana’s lacklustre performance, but of the nation itself.

Across Africa, many fans openly celebrated the defeat, donning sombreros, sharing taco memes, and changing their profile pictures to Mexican flags. The hashtag “Mexico versus xenophobia” trended for hours.

Behind the humour lay a deeper grievance: recent reports of xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa. For many, Thursday’s match became a symbolic reckoning.

“You can’t chase our people away and then expect us to cheer for your team just because you’re in the same World Cup group,” one Kenyan user posted. Another added, “I hope South Africa realises African migrants aren’t the reason they lost.”

Not everyone joined the pile-on. In South Sudan, fans in Juba’s public viewing centres remained loyal to Bafana Bafana, citing historical ties from the anti-apartheid struggle. “South Africa represents Africa here,” said student George Kenyi Charles Rehan. “All African countries should support them.”

South African supporters also pushed back, praising their team’s fighting spirit despite the loss and calling for unity beyond the banter.

However, the online trolling made one thing clear: for many on the continent, football and politics no longer stay in their own boxes.
