As the nation marks 27th Democracy Day, the academic community of the Federal Polytechnic Ile-Oluji, Ondo State has been charged to shun apathy and divisive politics.

The rector of the institution, Dr Ademola Ebeloku, in a statement yesterday called on the polytechnic community and all Nigerians to be committed to democratic processes to have a better country.

He said the day represented courage, sacrifice and the  unwavering determination of Nigerians to choose their own leaders.

He also reminded the community that democracy is not free; it was earned through the resolve of citizens who believed that their votes must count.

He said, “June 12 is more than a date on the national calendar; it represents courage, sacrifice, and the  unwavering determination of Nigerians to choose their own leaders. It reminds us that democracy is not free; it was earned through the resolve of citizens who believed that their votes must count.

“Democracy thrives when citizens are informed, responsible, and actively engaged in the affairs of their communities and nation.

“As a Federal Polytechnic, we have a special duty. We do not only train technicians, technologists, accountants, engineers, and other professionals; we also nurture future leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and problem-solvers who  will sustain and strengthen our democracy.

“To our students: Your power lies not in the ballot you will cast tomorrow, but in the skills you acquire today, the integrity you uphold, and the ideas you contribute to societal development. A strong democracy needs young people who are critical thinkers, who reject violence, misinformation, and intolerance, and who are committed to finding solutions to societal challenges.

“To our dedicated staff: I express my profound appreciation for your unwavering commitment to academic excellence and character development. Thank you for your mentorship and for instilling discipline, excellence, and patriotism in our students daily.”
