Stop Excuses, Take Responsibility, Bishop Urges Nigerian Leaders

The Anglican Bishop of Lafia Diocese, Right Reverend Godwin Robinson, has called on Nigerian leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, to stop excuses and take full responsibility for the country’s worsening security and economic challenges.

Bishop Robinson made the call in Lafia while delivering a sermon at the close of a three-day special church programme, where he said the habit of blaming regions or external factors would not resolve Nigeria’s deepening crises.

He stressed that leadership must be defined by accountability, decisive action and a commitment to restoring public confidence in governance at all levels.

According to him, Nigerian leaders must move beyond rhetoric and focus on practical solutions that directly address insecurity, poverty and growing social tensions across the country.

The cleric specifically urged President Bola Tinubu to adopt a more proactive and collective approach to ending insecurity, warning that delays in action continue to worsen the plight of citizens in affected communities.

Bishop Robinson said leaders have a duty to inspire hope, especially at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with hardship, violence and uncertainty about the future.

Citing the biblical account of David, he noted that true leadership requires humility, responsibility and the willingness to seek solutions rather than shift blame when challenges arise.

He lamented the growing disconnect between official narratives from Abuja and the realities faced by rural dwellers, where he said citizens are battling poverty, insecurity and rising ethno-religious tensions.

The Bishop also called for a sincere national dialogue devoid of political interests, saying such engagement is necessary to rebuild unity, strengthen economic recovery and promote peaceful coexistence.

“Only purposeful leadership, collective action, and genuine commitment to the welfare of the people can restore public confidence,” he said, adding that such steps are essential for sustainable development and lasting peace in Nigeria.
