Focus On Insecurity, Constitutional Reforms, Group Urges Govt

Pro-democracy groups have called on the government to take immediate action to protect the citizens from insecurity, warning that Nigeria is under a serious siege.

The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) issued a communique at a June 12 anniversary event in Lagos, calling for urgent steps to curb terrorism and banditry while speaking with the June 12 Democracy Movement.

Speaking for the group, Dr. Tunji Abayomi said governments at all levels must work with local communities to confront the worsening security situation without delay.

The groups also demanded a credible electoral process that reflects the clear will of Nigerians, urging the National Assembly to urgently review the Electoral Act, 2026, and put measures in place to ensure transparent and fair elections before 2027.

In the communique, Dr Abayomi criticised the 1999 Constitution as a product of military imposition and called on the National Assembly to begin legislation that would allow Nigerians to give themselves a democratic constitution.

He said the military only had authority to enact laws, not to impose a constitution on the people.

The MCE and its partners further urged greater government accountability in the management of national resources so that revenues are prioritised for security, welfare, and public services. They also warned that low agricultural productivity and rising food insecurity require concrete policies beyond promises.

To drive the reforms, the groups resolved to establish an ideological think tank of pro‑democracy actors to mobilise stakeholders and the public behind the communique’s recommendations.
