Insecurity: Muslim Clerics Back Matawalle’s Call For National Prayers

The Nigerian Muslims Forum has commended the Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, for his recent remarks emphasising the need for divine intervention through prayers to complement ongoing efforts to address the country’s security challenges.

The Forum’s Secretary-General, Professor AbdulKadir Umar Na’amo, made the position known in Gusau, Zamfara State, yesterday, stating that while military operations and other security measures remain important, Nigerians must also seek the intervention of Almighty God to overcome the persistent threats posed by banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

According to him, the complexity of Nigeria’s security challenges requires a combination of both physical and spiritual approaches, stressing that prayer remains a powerful tool capable of bringing lasting peace and stability to the nation.

Professor Na’amo praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to tackling insecurity, noting that significant progress has been recorded in several parts of the North-West and other regions since the administration came into office.

He said the President inherited enormous security challenges but has demonstrated determination by strengthening military operations, improving intelligence gathering, and providing increased support to security agencies.

“The achievements recorded in restoring relative peace in many communities, particularly in parts of the North-West, are commendable when compared to the difficult situation inherited from previous administrations,” he said.

The Forum therefore urged President Tinubu to consider convening a National Prayer Session involving Christian and Muslim clerics, traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders across the six geopolitical zones.

According to the group, such a gathering would unite Nigerians in seeking God’s guidance, protection, and intervention in the ongoing fight against criminal elements threatening national peace and development.

Professor Na’amo noted that criminals who hide under religious, ethnic, or political identities to perpetrate violence should not be associated with any genuine faith.

“Those who engage in the killing of innocent citizens, destruction of property, and acts of terror are enemies of humanity.

“They are merely hiding behind false narratives to spread fear and destabilize the country,” he stated.

He further argued that despite years of kinetic and non-kinetic strategies deployed against insurgents, bandits, and other criminal groups, the nation must continue to complement security operations with fervent prayers and moral support for security personnel.

“What option remains for Nigerians is to continue supporting the government through prayers while our gallant troops intensify operations against criminal elements.

“We believe that Almighty God can guide our security forces to greater successes and frustrate the activities of those determined to undermine the peace and unity of our country,” he said.

The Forum described Matawalle’s call for divine intervention as timely, courageous, and encouraging, saying it reflects the belief shared by millions of Nigerians that faith remains an important pillar in overcoming national challenges.

It urged citizens regardless of religious affiliation to pray for the nation, support security agencies with credible intelligence, and promote unity and peaceful coexistence.

“Only those who underestimate the power of prayer will dismiss the importance of seeking God’s intervention.

“Throughout history, nations have overcome difficult challenges through a combination of strategic action, unity, and faith in God,” Professor Na’amo added.
