Van Dijk Slams World Cup Hydration Breaks Amid Commercial Concerns

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has voiced concerns over the mandatory hydration breaks introduced at the FIFA World Cup, questioning their necessity in matches played under comfortable conditions.

The Liverpool defender made the remarks after the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw against Japan at the air-conditioned AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

FIFA introduced three-minute hydration intervals in each half of every match following extreme heat concerns experienced during last year’s expanded Club World Cup. The governing body said the measure was designed to protect player welfare.

However, the policy has sparked debate, with critics arguing that the stoppages disrupt the rhythm of matches and provide additional opportunities for commercial broadcasts.

Van Dijk suggested the breaks should be applied on a case-by-case basis rather than automatically across all fixtures.

“Hydration breaks are a bit interesting,” the Dutch skipper said. “I’ve watched almost all the games and every time there’s a break it seems to go straight to commercials. It’s not really something I like.”

He added that television audiences may also find the interruptions frustrating.

“If it’s really hot, then of course it makes sense,” Van Dijk continued. “But I think every game should be looked at separately.”

The debate intensified after Germany’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Curaçao. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann admitted the first-half hydration break gave his players an opportunity to regroup tactically after conceding an equaliser.

Broadcasters were granted permission by FIFA earlier this year to air advertisements during the stoppages, fuelling claims that commercial considerations have influenced the policy.

While player welfare remains FIFA’s primary justification, Van Dijk’s comments are likely to add momentum to calls for a more flexible approach as the tournament progresses across North America.
