Senegal Coach Rallies Diaspora Support As Visa Restrictions Keep Fans Away

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has called on the country’s diaspora communities across North America to create a home-like atmosphere when the Teranga Lions face France in their FIFA World Cup opener on Tuesday.

The two-time African champions enter the tournament without the large travelling support that traditionally follows the team to major competitions, with many supporters facing significant visa challenges in reaching the United States.

Senegal is among several African nations whose citizens encounter stricter entry requirements and higher costs when applying for visas, limiting the number of fans able to attend the tournament from home.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s clash in New York, Thiaw admitted the absence of Senegal’s renowned supporter groups would be felt.

“It’s a political issue and I prefer to focus on football,” he said. “Of course we would like to have our supporters with us because they give us strength, especially in difficult moments.”

Despite those challenges, the coach remains confident that Senegalese communities in North America will provide strong backing. New York, particularly the ‘Little Senegal’ district of Harlem, is home to a sizeable Senegalese population, while large communities also exist in cities such as Chicago and Montreal.

“We have a major Senegalese community here and Senegalese people are very patriotic,” Thiaw said. “They love their national team. Tomorrow you will see that support and you might not believe there are so few fans travelling from Senegal.”

The 45-year-old believes passionate support from the stands could prove decisive against a formidable French side.

“It’s going to be a difficult match against a team full of quality players,” he said. “But we are ready. We know how important it is to start well and we have our own strengths. If we do things correctly, we can beat any team.”

After facing France, Senegal remain in New York to take on Norway before concluding their group campaign against Iraq in Toronto.
