THINGS REMEMBERED: When Parents Select Partners For Marriage

In many traditional communities across Nigeria, marriage was once regarded less as an individual romantic decision and more as a carefully arranged family alliance.

Then parents played a central role in selecting both bride and groom.

The practice, in the North, for instance was deeply rooted in cultural and Islamic traditions.

These placed responsibility for spouse selection on parents and extended family members. Elders would assess potential matches based on moral standing, family background, religious commitment, and social reputation rather than personal affection between the intending couple.

In such arrangements, once a suitable partner was identified, families would initiate formal introductions and consultations. This was usually followed by negotiations involving bride price and customary rites, marking the beginning of a union that was seen as a bond between two families rather than just two individuals.

With this solid foundation, divorce was very rare.

Adherents of the practice still argue that parental involvement help ensure stability in marriages.

With years of experience and broader social exposure, parents were believed to make wiser choices that reduced the risk of marital breakdown. It also reinforced community values, strengthened kinship ties, and maintained cultural continuity across generations.

However, the practice has gradually evolved. Modern education, urbanisation, and exposure to global cultural influences have shifted attitudes toward marriage. Increasingly, young people now seek to choose their own partners based on emotional connection and mutual consent.

This shift has created a subtle tension between tradition and modernity. While many families still expect to be consulted or involved in marriage decisions, outright parental selection without the consent of the couple is becoming less common.

Today, a hybrid system is emerging in many communities, where parents still play advisory or supervisory roles, but the final decision increasingly rests with the individuals involved.

Despite these changes, the legacy of parental involvement in marriage remains an important cultural feature, reflecting a society in transition between long-standing traditions and contemporary expectations of personal choice.
