Nigerian rapper, Tochukwu Gbubemi Ojogwu, popularly known as Odumodublvck, has faced heavy criticism online following his controversial statement regarding the relevance of hip-hop music.

The rapper’s old assertion, previously made by afrobeats star Wizkid, claims that the hip-hop genre is no longer thriving.

Reacting via his X (formerly Twitter) handle to a newly released list of Nigerian artists with the highest monthly listeners on streaming platform Spotify, Odumodublvck, he said

“Hip Hop is dead.”

The rapper’s statement followed the total absence of hip-hop artists from the current top 10 list of most-streamed Nigerian musicians on Spotify, which is completely dominated by contemporary singers.

According to the latest data, Burna Boy leads the chart with 40.68 million monthly listeners, followed closely by Tems with 40.64 million. Rema ranks third with 29.43 million, while Ayra Starr and Wizkid occupy the fourth and fifth positions with 16.84 million and 16.81 million listeners, respectively.

Other artists completing the top 10 include Omah Lay (11.24m), Davido (10.83m), CKay (10.71m), Fireboy DML (9.23m), and Asake (8.69m).
