Nigerian-British photographer and filmmaker Misan Harriman, is taking his message of activism and social justice to global audiences through a new documentary, Shoot the People.

Directed by Nigerian-British filmmaker Andy Mundy-Castle, the documentary follows Harriman’s journey from acclaimed photographer to Oscar-nominated filmmaker, while highlighting his documentation of major global protest movements, including the Black Lives Matter movement, pro-Palestinian demonstrations and anti-racism campaigns.

Harriman, who became the first Black photographer to shoot the cover of British Vogue, says his work is driven by a commitment to “bear witness” to history and amplify voices often overlooked.

Speaking during an interview on Democracy Now!, Harriman said photography goes beyond capturing images and serves as a tool for preserving truth and inspiring empathy.

“My job is to amplify important moments,” he said, adding that documenting people demanding justice was more meaningful than attending high-profile events such as the Oscars.

The documentary also explores the rise of far-right violence, racial discrimination and social inequality in Britain and beyond, while emphasising the role of communities in resisting division.

Harriman, who identifies as neurodivergent, also spoke about embracing different ways of thinking, encouraging young people to see their uniqueness as a strength rather than a limitation.

Reflecting on his historic British Vogue cover, he described the achievement as a reminder of the need for greater diversity and opportunity within the creative industry.

Shoot the People presents Harriman’s photography as more than art, positioning it as a visual record of some of the defining social justice movements of recent years and a call for compassion, equality and civic action.
