Yobe Students Get Scholarship Boost

Yobe State government, through the scholarship board, has commenced the disbursement of scholarships to indigent students studying at Yobe State University, with an increase of 100 per cent compared to previous payments.

A statement by the scholarship board said the increment was part of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration’s commitment to enhancing education and student development.

According to the board, 28,000 Yobe indigenes students of higher education programmes ranging from Degree, Diploma, Certificates, Master’s and PhD across Nigeria will benefit from the scholarship.

The statement said the increment was designed to provide critical financial support, enabling students to pursue their academic programs with ease amid rising costs of education and living.

“We have started the disbursement exercise at Yobe State University, and will be extended to other institutions where Yobe indigenes are studying, in line with the governor’s directives,” it added.

The statement said the 100 per cent increment as approved by Governor Buni in all categories of scholarship payments, effectively doubling what students previously received, noting that the new payments for PGDE, Master’s, and PhD students, who will now receive ₦110,000, up from the former ₦55,000.

While undergraduate students will receive ₦46,000, as against ₦23,000 previously paid. HND, NCE and National Diploma students will now receive ₦34,000, instead of the former ₦17,000, while students pursuing other Diploma, Certificate and Consultancy programmes will now receive ₦26,000, up from ₦13,000.

Commenting on the initiative, the vice chancellor, Yobe State University, Prof Muhammad Bashir Tahir, commended Governor Mai Mala Buni for sustaining the state’s scholarship programme aimed at supporting students’ academic pursuits, describing the initiative as a significant investment in education and human capital development.

Also, the president of the National Union of Yobe State Students (NUYOSS), Yobe State University chapter, Comr Ahmad Maina Bukar, disclosed that students are receiving ₦46,000 each upon successful verification.

Some of the students who received the scholarship described it as a life saving looking at the current situation of the country, and commended the state government for its unwavering support given to students across the state.

These initiatives reflect the state government administration’s commitment to sustained focus on expanding access to quality education, encouraging academic excellence, and investing in the state’s future through human capital development. The statement added.
