The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Dayo Faduyile, the winner of the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election held on Saturday.
Faduyile, a former National President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), emerged victorious after securing the highest number of votes cast in the poll conducted across the six Local Government Areas of the senatorial district.
The Returning Officer for the election, Professor Gbenga Samuel, announced the result at the collation centre after the completion of the collation process.
According to the results released by INEC, the Ondo South Senatorial District has 672,302 registered voters, while 70,811 voters were accredited for the election.
Faduyile polled 68,474 votes to defeat his closest rival, Adeolu Akinwumi of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), who garnered 1,411 votes.
Other candidates in the contest recorded lower figures, with Olaoluwa Adesanya of the Action Peoples Party (APP) polling 213 votes, while Funso Clement of the Boot Party (BP) secured 70 votes.
INEC said 70,168 valid votes were cast during the election, while 602 votes were rejected, bringing the total number of votes counted to 70,770.
Declaring the result, Professor Samuel said Faduyile had satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of valid votes cast in the election.
“I hereby declare that Faduyile Adedayo of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of valid votes cast, is hereby declared the winner of the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election,” he stated.
The senatorial seat became vacant following the appointment and confirmation of the former senator representing the district, Jimoh Ibrahim, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
