Young Nigerian graduates are being exposed to primary digital skills in the power sector as the country designs initiatives to drive innovation in the industry.

Egbin Power Plc, as part of its youth development programme has graduated the first cohort of its Tech Empowerment Programme, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to equipping young people in its host communities with in-demand digital skills.

At the graduation ceremony, held at the Bright Gyimah Innovation Centre at Powerfields Schools, Egbin Power, Ikorodu, Lagos, 24 graduands were honoured for successfully completing the six-month intensive training programme.

The Tech Empowerment Programme is part of Egbin Power’s Personal Corporate Social Responsibility (PCSR) initiatives designed to provide young people in Egbin, Ijede and Ipakan with access to digital skills that can improve employability, foster entrepreneurship, and create new economic opportunities.

In his goodwill message at the graduation ceremony, the group managing director of Sahara Power Group, Kola Adesina, commended the graduands for their resilience and dedication, noting that their success represents a critical step toward building digitally empowered communities.

He encouraged the graduands to be curious and ready to advance current technologies to make them better, cheaper and faster. “The world is evolving rapidly, and digital skills are at the heart of that transformation. I encourage you to train your mind, commit to continuous improvement, and use the knowledge you have acquired to create value — not just for yourselves, but for your communities and the world at large,” Adesina said.

He further urged the graduands to maximise their time, share their knowledge, and remain committed to making a meaningful impact on society.

The chief executive officer of Egbin Power, Mokhtar Bounour, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, emphasising that the programme reflects its broader responsibility beyond electricity generation.

He said, “At Egbin Power, we believe that empowering young people is one of the most impactful ways to drive sustainable development, and we are confident that these graduands will apply the skills acquired to make a lasting impact across the digital landscape.”

Bounour urged the graduands to take bold action to develop innovative solutions that can accelerate socio-economic development. “Let your knowledge, creativity, and determination contribute to building a stronger, more innovative, and more prosperous Nigeria. You are all ambassadors of possibility, a proof that talent, when nurtured, becomes a catalyst for transformation,” he said.

The Tech Empowerment Programme delivered structured training across key areas including ICT fundamentals, graphic design, full-stack web development, digital marketing, cybersecurity and data analytics. The curriculum combined classroom instruction with hands-on learning and integrated workplace skills such as collaboration, problem-solving and time management.

The event was attended by top management members of Egbin Power, royal fathers, and other stakeholders from the Egbin, Ijede and Ipakan communities.

Speaking on behalf of the cohort, Dina Anjolaoluwa — who emerged as Overall Best Graduand and Most Outstanding Female — expressed appreciation to Egbin Power for providing a platform to empower youth.
