A disturbing video showing clean water turning dark with what appears to be crude oil within minutes has sparked outrage online, drawing renewed attention to the environmental crisis facing communities in the Niger Delta. The footage, reportedly from Bille Kingdom in Rivers State, has left many Nigerians stunned, with residents lamenting that their rivers, livelihoods and sources of drinking water are under constant threat.

Veteran actress and activist Hilda Dokubo has joined calls for urgent intervention, urging the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to come to the aid of affected communities. While some social media users questioned the authenticity of the video, many others expressed anger that such conditions have allegedly persisted for decades.

One commenter, who claimed to have served in Bayelsa State during the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in 2001, recounted experiencing similar conditions.

The user alleged that corps members were unable to drink or bathe with local water and often relied on sachet water transported from Port Harcourt. The commenter also claimed that many residents, including children, suffered from persistent skin conditions linked to environmental pollution.

The video has reignited conversations about oil pollution in the Niger Delta, with many Nigerians calling for immediate action to protect communities that continue to bear the environmental cost of the nation’s oil wealth. As reactions continue to pour in, one question remains: how much longer can affected communities wait for lasting solutions?
